Pram tyres looking a little bald? Wearing through one tyre's tread faster than another? Want to save time and money replacing your pram tyres? Here we've got 5 of the most common reasons! So if you've ever wondered why premature tread wear happens to your pram tyres and what you can do about it, then read on!
1. Incorrect Pressure
Low pram tyre pressure creates a whole manner of problems. One in particular is excess tyre wear. The lower the pressure the more tyre surface area is in contact with the ground. More contact, more friction. More friction, more wear. Simply, check the side of your pram tyres for the correct pressure you should be running!
2. Poor Quality Rubber
The old expression is, ‘buy cheap, buy twice’. Sadly not all pram tyres are made equal. Quality rubber will last longer, in the long run making it better value for money. So it might be tempting to get cheap tyres, but you can see them wear out faster. In the long run (depending on your mileage) it could be false economy to save a a bit of money, perhaps better to invest a bit of money thinking of the longer term.
3. Mis-aligned wheels
The wear on your tyres should be all straight and even in an ideal world. However, if you notice that tyres are not wearing true, then it could be a side something is out of shape. For example could be seeing the wear line is slightly to one side of centre. Or perhaps just one tyre is showing signs of wear out of sync with all the others. So simply replacing your tyres, might not solve the problem. Could be worth looking deeper into the cause!
4. Excess weight
Mis-aligned pram wheels leads perfectly into the ‘excess weight’ problem. Because if you carry too much weight on your pram it can (depending on the model) force your wheel to bow outward. Which in turn leads to excess tyre wear on the inside line of your tyres. Also, excess weight puts more pressure on the tyres, which creates more friction. As we know it all has a negative impact on tyre wear. So be conscious of not overloading things and it can help save your tyres (and your legs!) in the long run.
5. Incorrect Storage / Sunlight
Rubber is a natural substance and there are certain things its not so keen on. Being stored in direct sunlight for one. Without getting technical, best thing is not to store your pram (and their tyres) where they’ll be pounded by sunlight constantly. In simple terms, it can break down the bonds in the rubber, causing the tyres to crack which is bad. So if you keep your pram in the porch where it gets hammered 6 hours a day in the sun, maybe look to find a shadier spot.
